Dancer, how long is your reach?

Writer's picture: MBDT: Megan BoydMBDT: Megan Boyd

This is a difficult time for our local and global communities as we manage our shared COVID-19 quarantine, sense of isolation, and economic uncertainties. As always, the arts can be a means of support. Dance has been a human act of healing forever, so how can we reach out to our people now with dance to help? Are there safe ways of delivering dance messages to populations in need, who may be lonely and mourning, to demonstrate our solidarity and empathy with them? Dancer, how long is your reach? Who will you dance for? There are technological ways to connect that are safe and reduce people’s sense of loneliness. With sensitivity, a careful approach, and genuine care we can make a difference. Dance can be that art form, that human act that improves a person’s day. Do not underestimate it. Let’s reach out!

Could we, the dance alumni, somehow produce dance performance videos to share with communities near and far? I would offer that one intention of these videos could be to provide people with messages of hope and encouragement through this trying time.
